Writing and Mark Making

By the end of the Reception in writing, children are expected to be able to write legible letters, spell words by identifying sounds, and write simple, readable phrases and sentences. They should be able to apply their phonics knowledge to sound out and write words, with some words spelled correctly and others phonetically plausible.

Letter Formation:

Children should be able to form most letters correctly, recognizing and using them in their writing.

Phonics and Spelling:

They should be able to use their phonics knowledge to spell words, identifying sounds and representing them with letters.

Sentence Structure:

Children should be able to write simple sentences that can be understood by others.

Plausible Spelling:

While some words might be spelled correctly, others might be phonetically plausible, reflecting the child's understanding of the sounds in words.

Meaningful Writing:

Children should be able to write meaningful phrases and sentences, demonstrating their ability to communicate their ideas in written form.
