This week we move onto our poetry reading unit!  This will give us an opportunity to enjoy poems together.  Don't forget to spend some time enjoying your new poetry book that Santa left you at Christmas!

Avocado Baby

This is one of our core reading spine stories! Listen to the story here!

Can you answer my questions about the story?

Last week we found out about Chinese New Year, read the poem here about Chinese New Year with your grown up.

Discuss: Which is your favourite part of the poem and why?

My favourite part of the poem was the part when they saw coloured fireworks because I love the idea of seeing the different colours popping across the sky!

Read the poem together again.  Today we are going to look for interesting words in the poem.  Make a list of words that you think are interesting.  The words I like best are:

  • lanterns
  • drumbeat
  • beautiful lion
  • winding body
  • fluttering

Which word is your favourite?  Why?  Can you use this word in a sentence?

Here's mine:  I saw a beautiful pink butterfly fluttering near the green bushes.

Today's task is to read the poem together again.  Do you like the poem?  Explain why.  Then your challenge today is to see if you can find the rhyming words in the poem.  I'll give you a will find them at the end of the line.  Here's a pair of rhyming words I found:

fish and dish

Year and near

Today is a day for performance poetry.  Here is a poem that I would like you to try and learn and perform for your family!  You could even video it and send you video into school.....we would love to see it!
