Explain that grown-ups and children often use the words secret and surprise to mean the same thing and that secrets and surprises can be safe to keep. Reinforce the point that surprises generally describe happy things that others will eventually find out about. Reassure children that some secrets might be kept safely if they also describe happy things that can be shared eventually but that any type of secret or surprise that leaves them feeling uncomfortable or worried is not safe.
