This term in Prophets class, we will be reading The Last Bear by Hannah Gold:

There are no polar bears left on Bear Island. At least, that’s what April’s father tells her when his scientific research takes them to this remote Arctic outpost for six months. But one endless summer night, April meets one. He is starving, lonely and a long way from home. Determined to save him, April begins the most important journey of her life…

This moving story will win the hearts of children the world over and show them that no one is too young or insignificant to make a difference. The Last Bear is a celebration of the love between a child and an animal, a battle cry for our world and an irresistible adventure with a heart as big as a bear’s.

Reading and the comprehension of reading continue to be of vital importance in Year 6. The children are expected to be completing 10 minutes per night of reading in order to develop their fluency, understanding and vocabulary. Without developing these skills, it becomes extremely difficult to write at a Year 6 standard.

Writing

This term we will be using Hannah Gold's work to inspire us to produce some truly incredible Year 6 writing. We will adopt her characters and even write from their point of view as we explore the frozen kingdoms of the Arctic and Antarctic.

Year 6 will begin with writing and informal letter from April her friends or family back home about her incredible discovery on Bear Island. Prophets class will have to get to know April's personality and the authors style to write from the point of view of this animal loving explorer.

We will then be creating a diary entry from the day that April first met her polar bear on the island and relive the rollercoaster of emotion that we know she would have experienced when she was confronted by what was potentially the very last polar bear on Bear island.
