In Year 6, our reading expectations are that children read 5 times a week. This is because reading is the gateway into understanding the world and also drastically improves standards in writing. We would encourage reading with your children as frequently as possible to develop understanding and create meaningful conversations about reading.
This term for our class book, Prophets class will be reading 'River Boy' by Tim Bowler. This is a fascinating story about a girl who takes it upon herself to help her grandfather, an artist, complete his final painting on his boyhood home. The story involves mystery and love and will revolve around lots a questioning.
This term, we will be focusing on writing to discuss. This is an area full of opportunity and we combine it with out topic of 'Tomorrow's World' and have chances to engaging the children in powerful discussions about their own individual thoughts and feelings about technology. This will be a key part of our writing curriculum as children will not only be using their own opinions but they will also have to validate and explain, using evidence, why they have that opinion. We look forward to our debates and discussion text we will be writing this term and cannot wait to see what the children produce.
