Summer terms 1 and 2: Greenhouse
Children study greenhouses’ purpose, structure, materials and design features. They build on their knowledge of frame structures introduced in the Y1 Shade and Shelter project and woodwork from the Y2 Beach Hut project by investigating the use of diagonal struts, butt joints and triangular corners to strengthen a frame structure. Children also research and compare work of two famous greenhouse designers- Sir Joseph Paxton and Sir Nicholas Grimshaw. They chose a suitable material for a greenhouse covering based on its properties. Children design and make mini greenhouses using strengthening, finishing and joining techniques.
