Reading

In Year 6, our reading expectations are that children read 5 times a week. This is because reading is the gateway into understanding the world and also drastically improves standards in writing. We would encourage reading with your children as frequently as possible to develop understanding and create meaningful conversations about reading.

This term we will be reading Fireweed by Jill Paton Walsh. This is sometimes a book that is overlooked when it comes to KS2 fiction but is a fantastic novel from the Pie Corbett Reading Spine. It follows the movements of 2 school children through war time London, free from interfering parents - which sounds brilliant, until reality hits.

Writing

This term in writing we will be focusing on writing to entertain. During this term we will be: writing poetry to perform for Remembrance Day, writing a setting and character description for a 3rd person narrative and creating a full story for our 1st person narrative. We will use a range or writing stimulus for these units with Mexican links to make it fun and engaging with our Hola Mexico topic.
