Mayflower Plaza

Transported had lots of fun, some great ideas and constructive responses at their recent consultations for new public artworks in the upcoming Mayflower Plaza in Boston.  Emma and Giuseppe Belli, Lincolnshire-artists, have been leading fun and family-friendly activities to help gather opinions on what Boston think the plaza artworks can enhance the space for:

• Socialising

• Breaktimes and Eating

• Playing

• Reflection

• Relaxation

The consultation is another step in working in partnership with Boston Borough Council to make more of the town and the public spaces.  Today is the last of this phase of in-person activity-based consultations so please do go along and find them at Boston College campus under the Transported gazebo between 9:30am-4:30pm to have a chat but there's plenty of time to let them know your views by emailing  transported@lincoln.ac.uk.

Food is handled safely

Equipment, facilities and the building are clean and in good condition

Controls are in place to ensure food is safe to eat

All businesses should be able to achieve the top rating of 5.

Be inspection ready – plan, register and prepare.

You can find more at www.food.gov.uk/business-inspections

Free-from versus vegan food – know the difference

Do you know the difference between a ‘free-from’ and ‘vegan’ label?   A ‘free-from’ label guarantees the product doesn’t contain the specified allergen. To use this label, food businesses must follow strict processes to ensure the allergen isn’t present.   However, these rules don’t apply to vegan or plant-based products, which means there could be a chance of cross-contamination with allergens such as milk, eggs, fish or shellfish.   Don’t take the risk. Always read the label.   Find out more: www.food.gov.uk/vegan-food

"It is great to see the work carried out by Virdis be recognised in this way, and it reflects the sensitive way in which the heritage of the building has been respected through the improvement work.

Parish Council Liaison Meeting

Boston Borough Council is to work even more closely with parish councils following a very positive meeting with parish council representatives.  The Council organised a parish council liaison meeting and was delighted with the attendance from across the borough.   Feedback from the parish councils was extremely positive with one representative stating it was the best meeting they have ever had with the Borough Council.   At the meeting, parish councils learned more about the many funding opportunities available to them and community groups for projects. They also received updates on council services and were given an opportunity to ask many questions.

It was a chance for the Borough Council to listen to the parish councils, learn more about issues impacting their communities, to answer questions as well as receive many suggestions and ideas.   Cllr Anne Dorrian, Leader of Boston Borough Council, said: “I was absolutely delighted to welcome so many parish council representatives – this is just the start of what I hope will become a closer working relationship with our parish councils.   “Parish councillors are all hard working, committed volunteers who want to do the best for their residents and communities. Boston Borough Council will support them and work together with the parishes to help in any way we can.  “The meeting had lots of information on funding as well as updates they can share with residents on such things as fly tipping and enforcement. There was lots of debate, sharing of information and ideas put forward.  “I would like to thank the parish councils for attending and I look forward to welcoming even more at the next liaison meeting very soon.”

Energy Efficiency Survey

The South and East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership wants to hear from local businesses and education providers to understand the challenges in terms of decarbonising domestic properties.  We want to hear from those involved in delivering energy efficiency and low-carbon heating measures such as floor, wall and roof insulation, solar PV, air-source heat pumps, double glazing and heating controls alongside those whose business could be tapping into that market but has either consciously decided not to or isn’t interested at this time.   We are also keen to understand from education providers and local businesses what the gaps are in terms of training opportunities to help people develop their skills in this area, either to broaden the current offer of a business, to retrain or to simply gain expertise within the domestic retrofit sector.  The information gathered from these short online surveys will be used to compile a report and development plan for addressing these challenges which will be submitted to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. A multi-million programme of support has been identified by the Department and could enable the local area to tap into funding to help address some of those challenges in the longer term if the need and be evidenced and solutions identified.  A series of online workshops have also been scheduled over the coming weeks. If you would like to discuss this work further, please call Sarah Baker on 07917 337857.  For more information and to take part in the survey, please visit https://loom.ly/Pbn5i24  The survey closes on Friday 9th February, 2024.

Did you know that lighting fires in our homes is the largest source of harmful small particle air pollution in the UK?  If you didn’t, you’re not alone! Here in Boston Borough our air pollution levels are generally low in most areas of the borough – which is great! But its important we all take steps to keep things that way. The Council is currently undertaking a review of Council Tax accounts where a Single Person Discount has been claimed. This is to ensure that residents are receiving the correct amount of discount and that our records are accurate.

We have a duty to review this to ensure your circumstances haven’t changed and that you still qualify for this discount.  It is important that you respond promptly to the review letter, even if you are still the only adult resident. Failure to do so will result in your Single Person Discount being removed, and we will issue a new Council Tax bill

Active Lincolnshire – Let’s Move Lincolnshire

Active Lincolnshire, the local Active Partnership funded by Sport England, welcomes the Government’s new national strategy to help get more people active by 2030; ‘Get Active: A strategy for the future of sport and physical activity’.

This new national strategy details how the Government plan to tackle 1 in 4 adults being currently inactive, with 11 million adults doing less than 30 minutes of exercise a week, and half of the nation’s children doing less than the recommended 60 minutes of exercise per day.  They aim to increase national participation levels with a new National Physical Activity Taskforce from both government and the sector to drive it forward and track progress of the goals to get 2.5 million more adults and over 1 million more children active by 2030.

Locally, Active Lincolnshire spearhead the local strategy for physical activity – Let's Move Lincolnshire. Organisations and stakeholders across Lincolnshire from local authorities, planning to health and care, National Governing Bodies and physical activity providers all have a role to play in enabling more people in Lincolnshire to be more active, more often. ‘Let's Move Lincolnshire’ advocates for a ‘whole system approach’ to tackling the challenge of inactivity and increasing accessible and inclusive, relevant options to be active, recognising together we need to create the conditions for change.

Responding to the opportunity to better use technology to support people to be more active, Active Lincolnshire recently launched Street Tag in the county; the app is a digital platform to get people moving through virtual challenges. Over £300,00 has been invested through Opening School Facilities, with Active Lincolnshire working with schools to enable them to open their facilities (such as swimming pools, sports halls and pitches) for community use outside of school hours. Wheels for Life, is a bike donation and refurbishment scheme that has been established by the charity which supports people in transport poverty with refurbished bikes and cycling accessories while also supporting the development of community hubs and upskilling local residents by training bike mechanics for the programme.  All of these programmes respond to the challenges of living in a rural county like Lincolnshire and are designed and developed with an understanding of the needs of local people, bringing options to be active into daily lives.

Active Lincolnshire recently supported the set-up of Yarborough Park Run, a free way to encourage people walking or running 5k on a Saturday morning and funded the Good Boost programme at multiple locations, delivering personalised care for people with musculoskeletal conditions. Equivalent programmes have been highlighted in the new strategy highlighting the governments ambitions.

Currently 58.7% of Lincolnshire adults (Active Lives Survey 2021-22) do not meet the Chief Medical Officer Guidelines of 150 minutes of moderate intensity minutes of activity a week. 30% of those people are inactive (that is doing less than 30 minutes activity a week). Active Lincolnshire address the disparity in activity levels across places and demographics in their current strategies and are working on creating more equality of opportunity for people across the districts.
