Maths
In our first term we will be looking at place value and the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). These skills form the vital basis for all other areas of maths.
Place Value

Children will begin by building on previous knowledge of place value. By the end of this unit, children should have gained and practiced the following skills:
- Read, write, order and compare numbers to 1,000,000
- Interpret negative numbers in context
- Round any number up to 1,000,000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000 and 10,000
- Read Roman numerals to 1000
Addition and Subtraction

This unit will allow children to practice and improve formal written methods for adding and subtracting as well as learn techniques to improve mental addition and subtraction. Children will then learn to apply these methods to a variety of worded problems. Skills children develop in this unit are:
- Add and subtract numbers with more than four digits
- Add and subtract numbers mentally
Use rounding to check calculations
- Solve multi-step problems using addition and subtraction
