At St Nicholas C.E. Primary Academy, we recognise the importance of providing our children with a chronological understanding of past events. We aim to explore how ancient civilisations have made way for modern history and how both of these aspects, alongside Christian teachings, shape how we shine our light in the modern world.
Implementation
At St Nicholas, we teach historical skills and knowledge through our progressive curriculum based on carefully selected Cornerstones topics which allow us to align with the National Curriculum and ensure coverage across all key stages. Our Curriculum is taught on a two-year cycle and within phases (EYFS, Year 1/2, Year 3/4 and Year 5/6).
We use 'WOW' events pre and post topics, where appropriate, which can involve artefacts, visitors, workshops and trips. These are all used to instill a sense of awe and wonder, giving all our learners a real sense of what the world was like in different periods of time and allowing these experience to provide powerful stimuli.
Impact
Our History curriculum allows all learners to foster a love of historical learning. Children are given the experiences required to bring history to life. We measure the impact of our curriculum through the use of pupil voice and providing pre and post Cornerstones topic quizzes alongside summative assessment, allowing us to monitor the progress of all of our learners. We provide the historical foundations which give children the ability to flourish and move on to the next stage of their education.
