Open wide – let’s take a look inside. We’re on a voyage of discovery to investigate the busy world inside your body. Do you have a toothy grin or a winning smile? Take dental impressions and test the effects of sugary substances on your pearly whites. Follow a tasty morsel as it makes its way through your digestive system, helped by some mouthwatering saliva. And don’t forget the importance of good hygiene at both ends. And whilst we’re talking business, could you recognise an animal just by its poo? Are you brave enough to take the challenge? Make a working model of the digestive system and use it to persuade others to eat healthily. Learn how to look after this marvellous belching, squelching, mixture making machine we call our body.
Today ASDA Steve came in to kick off our topic! He brought lots of healthy and tooth friendly foods in for us to try and we played a game of ‘higher and lower’ with the amount of sugar that each item had in it. We were so surprised by the amount of sugar that some foods had in them, especially as children our age should only have 5 spoons of sugar a day!
Today we started our tooth decay experiment using hard boiled eggs. We use eggs because the shell has similar properties to our tooth enamel. We submerged the eggs in coca-cola, vinegar and water to see how they effect the egg shells. We also coated some eggs in toothpaste to see how that would protect the eggs.
We ended our topic by creating the healthy snacks that we have been learning about and designing. ASDA Steve came to help us cut the fruit and prepare the healthy fruit skewers that we took home to enjoy.
