Reading for Pleasure

Our class novel this term is...

Our class novel this term is a poignant, humorous story of a pig, a spider and a little girl.

Wilbur the pig's life has already been saved by Fern, but when he is sold to her uncle, he realises his life is in even more danger. Enter Charlotte A. Cavatica, a beautiful large grey spider. Charlotte is determined to keep Wilbur from the chopping block, and comes up with an ingenious way to do just that.

Reading at Home

Each Thursday our class enjoys time in the school library with our dedicated librarians. All children are encouraged to spend quality time exploring the books and choosing one they would like to take home to enjoy! We expect parents and children to spend time enjoying their chosen book before changing it the next week!

Reading Lessons

We will start the term by exploring some of the classics such as 'The Witches' and 'The Velveteen Rabbit' before moving on to read some non-fiction texts. In our poetry sessions we will be learning through the medium of song including 'Like a bridge over troubled water' and 'Electricity' from Billy Elliot!

Writing

Fiction: Stories with a historical setting

 

Vocabulary: historical, workhouse, rake, moaner, chimneys, orphan, fury, dreadful, distressing, despondent, trudged, shameful, will, misery, sanitation.

 

This term we will be writing to entertain, using the stimulus of a story with a historical setting: Runaways!  Writeen by Jim Eldridge, we will explore the setting he creates and use his words to immerse ourselves in the story!  The setting and period will then provide inspiration for our own writing.

 

Key Writing purpose: To use the historical setting and characters from Runaways! to write a new part of the story from one character's point of view.

 

 

                                                   

Non- Fiction: Newspapers

Vocabulary: awed, wary, despondently, trudged, 'steal out', refuge

 

In the non-fiction unit, the children will broaden their knowledge of the Victorian period by looking through journalistic texts that are typical of the period. They will learn about the features of newspaper articles and entries and be given the opportunity to write their own entry for a class newspaper set during the Victorian era!

Key writing purpose: To write an entry for a class newspaper that is set during Victorian times.
