Addition and Subtraction

Vocabulary:

Addition, subtraction, sum, difference, fact families, number bonds.

We will continue our addition and subtraction unit that we began last term.

In regards to addition and subtraction, by the end of year 2 the children should be able to:

•    Solve problems with addition and subtraction using concrete objects and pictorial representations, including those involving numbers, quantities and measures
•    Solve problems with addition and subtraction applying  increasing knowledge of mental and written methods
•    Recall and use addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently, and derive and use related facts up to 100
•    Add and subtract numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and mentally, including: a two-digit number and ones; a two-digit number and tens; two two-digit numbers; adding three one-digit numbers
•    Show that addition of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and subtraction of one number from another cannot
•    Recognise and use the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction and use this to check calculations and solve missing number problems.

Shape

Vocabulary:

2-D, 3-D, sides, vertices, symmetry, faces, edges.

During this unit the children will be taught to:

  •  identify and describe the properties of 2-D shapes, including the number of sides and line symmetry in a vertical line
  •  identify and describe the properties of 3-D shapes, including the number of edges, vertices and faces
  • identify 2-D shapes on the surface of 3-D shapes, [for example, a circle on a cylinder and a triangle on a pyramid]
  • compare and sort common 2-D and 3-D shapes and everyday objects.

2D Shapes | KS1 Year 2 Maths | STEM Home Learning

Do you know what are 2D shapes? In this STEM and Beyond Maths video we will learn how about 2D shapes, how they are formed and their characteristics. We will learn some new vocabulary and practise our Maths together.

3D Shapes | KS1 Maths Year 2 | Home Learning

Let's learn about 3D shapes! In this interactive English online video, we learn about what 3D shapes are. Learn to recognise 3D shapes and some of their characteristics like faces, vertices and sides. Explore Planet English videos entertain your children while they learn more about maths, in English, for STEM and the KS1 curriculum.
