Maths

Maths is threaded throughout the routine within Noah's Ark class, all working towards the Early Learning Goals that children are working to achieve by the end of the academic year.

Below are the 'goals' that children work towards throughout their Reception class year.

The children will be working with the White Rose Maths scheme. To find out more click on the link below.

The children will acquire skills in understanding number and seeing the patterns that will be a basis for their Maths knowledge to take them into their future Maths learning.

Counting

Practicing counting and number language is something that can be used throughout the day. In class we will take the opportunity to count in a variety of ways and situations. Counting fruit at snack-time, children as they line up and when playing games, so that children enjoy counting and are inspired to continue independently.

When counting objects children can get 'carried away' when saying the individual numbers and we will encourage pointing or touching an item for each number.

Shapes

Noah's Ark are learning about lots of different 2D and 3D shapes. We talk about how many sides they have, how many corners they have, and if they always look the same. We are learning to recognise shapes in our environment. Why not see what shapes you can find in and around your home.

Subitise

Subitise is when an amount can be recognised without counting. We will be playing games using a dice to become familiar with the dots and the corresponding amount, with quick recognition. To support children at home you could use a dice to play with and use number language in everyday situations, such as talking about small amounts of items “you have two cars”.

One more/one less

To build on the children's number knowledge and understanding we are exploring the language of less and more. We are initially focusing on one more and one less so that children are fluent in their knowledge of the order of numbers.

Week beginning 18.10.21 - this week we have been using lots of different items to practice making repeating patterns.

Week beginning 11 October - we have been comparing short and tall and used the blocks to follow instructions to make a taller tower than Mrs Tory’s or one that was shorter. We used different sized blocks and predicted how many we could hold in one hand and then counted to see if our predictions were correct.

Week beginning 4th October - we have been noticing when things are the same, and when they are different. We have used lots of objects to compare them in different ways.

Week beginning 27th September- we have been looking at different objects this week. Buttons, children, numicon and Numberblocks. We are noticing things that are the same about the objects and things that are different. We noticed that the children were all wearing dresses, but one zip pull had a heart shape and the other two had flowers. We are thinking of different ways to talk about the objects.

Week beginning 20the September - we have been practicing counting objects this week. We have counted beanbags we threw in the tyres outside, the fruit pictures on our ‘Favourite fruit’ chart, and different coloured counters.

Week beginning 13th September - we explored hair and eye colour and then made a tally chart to represent the amounts. We practiced counting in order to find out which colour the most children had. We also used Fred 🐸 to sing 5 Speckled frogs.

Week beginning 6th September 2021 - this week we looked at the number cards and completed actions to correspond with the amount. We clapped our hands and stamped our feet as we counted along.
