Chinese New Year is next week ...

The Chinese New Year of 2021 falls on February 12th (Friday), and the festival will last to February 26th, about 15 days in total. 2021 is a Year of the Ox according to Chinese zodiac. As an official public holiday, Chinese people can get seven days' absence from work, from February 11th to 17th.

Chinese New Year Poem to read and discuss

Choose one of the sheets to complete for the week or complete each daily task.

Discuss: Which is your favourite part of the poem and why?

My favourite part of the poem was the part when they saw coloured fireworks because I love the idea of seeing the different colours popping across the sky!

Wednesday

Read the poem together again.  Today we are going to look for interesting words in the poem.  Make a list of words that you think are interesting.  The words I like best are:

  • lanterns
  • drumbeat
  • beautiful lion
  • winding body
  • fluttering

Which word is your favourite?  Why?  Can you use this word in a sentence?

Here's mine:  I saw a beautiful pink butterfly fluttering near the green bushes.

Thursday

Today's task is to read the poem together again.  Do you like the poem?  Explain why.  Then your challenge today is to see if you can find the rhyming words in the poem.  I'll give you a hint....you will find them at the end of the line.  Here's a pair of rhyming words I found:

fish and dish

Year and near

Friday

Today is a day for performance poetry.  Here is a poem that I would like you to try and learn and perform for your family!  You could even video it and send you video into school.....we would live to see it!
