Fractions

This term we will be focussing on developing our knowledge and understanding of fractions.

The children will begin by recapping their understanding of unit and non unit fractions from Year 2, where they will learn to explain the similarities and differences between unit and non unit fractions. Next the children will be introduced to fractions with denominators other than 2, 3 and 4, which they used in Year 2.

Spr4.5.1 - Unit and non-unit fractions

Next the children explore fractions in different representations, for example, fractions of shapes, quantities and fractions on a number line. They explore and recap the meaning of numerator and
denominator, non unit and unit fractions.

Spr4.5.2 - What is a fraction?

Following on from this, we will investigate and record equivalent fractions through bar models. As the children explore equivalent fractions in pairs, the aim is that they begin to spot patterns.

Spr4.6.2 - Equivalent fractions (1)

As the children's understanding increases we will then look at problems solving, adding and subtracting fractions and also fractions greter than one.

Spr4.8.4 - Calculate quantities
