Everyday Materials

Vocabulary:

Absorbent, ceramic, concrete, human-made, natural, synthetic fabric, transparent.

This science project teaches children that objects are made from materials. They will identify a range of everyday materials in places familiar to them, such as home and school and their sources. They will learn that some materials are natural and some are human-made. Children will then investigate the properties of materials and use their learning to design and make bunting to withstand the weather. We will work scientifically by writing scientific questions, conduct various tests to determine a materials' properties and we will sort materials by using Venn diagrams.

Venn diagram

We tested and grouped materials in a venn diagram based on their properties.

Sorting objects based on the material they are made from.

Innovate - We tested out different materials and then created a bunting. Our bunting needed to be water proof and bendy. We put one bunting outside and one inside and compared our results after a few days.
