Fiction

Vocabulary:

Aroma,  cowered,   scrumptious,   menacing

 

This Unit uses a picture book, G.E.M. by Jane Clarke and Garry Parsons and a humorous fantasy adventure story, Chocolate Planet by Jon Blake, to explore settings and ideas used in fantasy stories.

 

Reading

Children will:

  • connect and explore the central themes of envy and courage in Chocolate Planet by drawing links between texts
  • explore features of different fantasy settings
  • use drama to explore the motivations behind characters' actions and behaviour.

 

Writing

 

To write a fantasy story set in space.

 

 My fantasy story:

• includes a quest, a problem and a resolution

 • includes sights, smells, tastes, sounds or feelings to create atmosphere

 • shows a problem the characters face and how they overcome it.

 

Grammar:

• includes correct use of past or present tense.

Non-fiction

Vocabulary:

Information, index, definition, glossary, heading. 

 

Reading:

Children will:

• read and identify key points about chocolate and how it is made

 • explore the features of information texts and how they make it easy for the reader to locate information

• consider the different ways information is presented to engage the audience, e.g. pictures, diagrams, photos.

 

Writing:

 Our chocolate exhibition:

• presents information in a variety of ways, e.g. photos, quiz questions, fact files, pictures

• includes an accordion booklet.

 

Grammar:

• uses capital letters for names of things or places.

 

The Non-fiction week, linked by the theme of chocolate, looks at information texts.

Where appropriate, the children will be encouraged to develop an awareness of audience and purpose in relation to the fiction and non-fiction texts they are reading and writing.
