This term our we will be focusing on the physical and human characteristics of the United Kingdom, looking at the countries that make up the UK, their location and their capital cities. We will have a detailed exploration of the characteristics and features of the capital city of England, London.

 

 

United Kingdom

 


The United Kingdom (UK) is a union of four countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. A capital city is a city that is home to the government and ruler of a country. London is the capital city of England, Belfast is the capital city of Northern Ireland, Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland and Cardiff is the capital city of Wales. The countries of the United Kingdom are made up of cities, towns and villages.

 

There are a variety of physical features (naturally created features of the Earth) that make up the UK. Mountains, hills, lakes, forests, islands, coastlines and rivers. 

 

 

London

 

After looking at the UK in general we will focus on London, the capital city of England and the UK.  

Transport, travel and landmarks of London

Year 1 loved having a role play Royal Garden party and learning who the Royals are, the National Anthem and learning how Royal Garden Parties happen at Buckingham Palace in London.

The children learned what the 4 counties in the UK are and their Capital cities.

Year 1 used Google Earth to spot some of the landmarks they had learned about.
