Reading

In EYFS, children are introduced to reading straight away! They are encouraged to look at the print that is all around them in our setting. We also share lots of stories together as a class, practising our story telling language.

T
Imagehe first book that children receive to bring home is a picture book. Picture books are fantastic! They encourage children to tell their own story and develop their vocabulary.

When reading with your child, you can support them by asking questions about what is happening in the story. Here are some examples of what you could ask:

1. What is happening in the picture?
2. Where does the story take place?
3. Have you ever been to a .... (farm, park, hairdressers etc)
4. How does this character feel? How do you know?
5. What do you think will happen next?

(You will find more suggestions on the reading handout that was given to your child or you can download it below.)

Reading for all children should be an enjoyable experience. Where possible, we would like children to read every day at home. Please find time when you can give your child your full attention and stop if they become tired.

When children have read at home,  record this in their reading record. All children who have read 3 times a week or more will receive a sticker and their name will go into a drawer to win a reading prize at the end of the week.

If you have any questions at all, please do come and speak to one of the team!
